Other Ways To Play The Wild Goose Chase

Wild Goose Chase is a crazy game that can be played in an abundance of ways...

Many of which are explained in the rule book. However here is a more in-depth description of the other modes. There are also some bonus modes that are not in the rules...

There are 10 different ways to play the game listed in this post! We would love to hear any from you, if you have any questions, house rules or any other game mode ideas! Or even to let us know your favourite mode, get in touch...

Difference between variants and game modes:

  • A variant has changes to the game but it still gets played in either of the two main games modes - Wild Goose controlled by the die or by a player.
  • A game mode is something completely new...

Wild Goose Chase (Family Variant)

This variant is suitable for families or younger players.

  • Unlike the main game there is no penalties for having same answer as another player!
  • There is also no penalty for having the wrong spellings.
  • We recommend not playing with topics 54 through to 78, these are the harder topics.
  • Playing with modifiers is also optional
  • This variant can be played with a player controlled Wild Goose or can be played the standard way where the Wild Goose is controlled by die.

Wild Goose Chase (Quick Game Variant)

This variant makes the game quicker and harder from the start. There are only two key differences. This variant can be played with a player controlled Wild Goose or can be played the standard way where the Wild Goose is controlled by die.

  1. From the game start, Modifier cards last 3 rounds.
  2. If playing the standard game mode, when the Wild Goose roll a 0, it can roll again. Remove Modifier card 'Re-Roll' - number 26.

Wild Goose Chase (Hardcore Variant)

This Variant is for the hardcore Goslings who want an extra challenge... Once again there are only two key differences. This variant can be played with a player controlled Wild Goose or can be played the standard way where the Wild Goose is controlled by die.

  1. Every Modifier card drawn is permanent (except Modifier card numbers: 1, 7 is optional, 9 and 29. If modifiers conflict, the newest one takes president.
  2. If playing the standard game mode, when the Wild Goose roll a 0, it can roll again. Remove Modifier card 'Re-Roll' - number 26.
  3. Place a Flight + Modifier card in the Active Modifier zone from the game start (card number 19 or 20).

Wild Goose Race (Variant)

This variant has a simple change to the win condition of the game which can make the game quicker.

  • Instead of winning when you're the last Gosling alive or when you overtake the Wild Goose, Set the amount of laps to be completed (e.g. 2).
  • First player to complete 2 laps wins the game.
  • This variant can be played with a player controlled Wild Goose or can be played the standard way where the Wild Goose is controlled by die.
  • If the Wild Goose catches all Goslings before the set amount of laps are complete then the Wild Goose wins!

Wild Goose Earthquake (Variant)

This variant changes the way Modifier cards are drawn!

  • The Modifier cards are kept separate and have their own deck (place this to the side or in the very center of the board.
  • Every 3 rounds a new modifier card is drawn from this deck.
  • When a lap is complete the length of rounds that modifier cards last still increases however you also must now pick up 2 modifier cards every 3 rounds instead of 1 card. On the 3rd lap pick up 3 card every 3 rounds and so on.
  • There is no cap on how many can be picked up and unlike the standard game there is no cap on how many rounds the Modifier cards can last! The longer the game goes on and the more laps that are completed the harder the game gets.

Wild Goose Home (Variant)

This variant has a simple change to the win condition.

  • The first gosling to land on the home space wins the game.
  • Goslings must land on it, if they go past it they must try again next lap unless they find a way to go backwards somehow?!
  • If Goslings don't answer or get an incorrect answer they must roll the die and move back that many spaces.
  • The Wild Goose's objective is to catch all the Goslings.

Wild Goose Elimination (Game Mode)

This is a completely new game mode! There is no Wild Goose in this mode. Every lap the last Gosling to complete the lap is eliminated. The last Gosling alive wins. Every lap a new effect is in play to make the game quicker - previous lap effects do not carry over. The amount of laps is dependent on how many players are playing - max 5 laps. Remove mods that only affect the Wild Goose (Modifier card numbers: 2 and 17 through to 28).

  • Lap 1 - Bonus point for the longest answer each round.
  • Lap 2 - Special spaces are worth double
  • Lap 3 - If you get same answers move and add 3 points.
  • Lap 4 - Write two answers, same answers are not allowed.
  • Lap 5 - Double points!

Wild Goose Tag (Game Mode)

This is a completely new game mode. Set a timer for 20 minutes with a smartphone or tablet.

  • All but one player are Wild Geese, decide this with a dice roll. The highest roll becomes the single Gosling.
  • The Wild Geese wake up after one round.
  • If a Wild Goose ever overtakes the Gosling, they switch roles (the Wild Goose becomes the Gosling, and the Gosling becomes a Wild Goose).
  • If two or more Wild Geese overtake the Gosling at the same time, the furthest forward on the board becomes the Gosling, if they are on the same space roll the die to decide. The highest roll becomes the Gosling.
  • The winner is the Gosling when the timer goes off.
  • In this mode when Modifier cards reference Goslings change it to Wild Geese, likewise when it says Wild Goose change it to Gosling.

      Wild Goose Reverse (Game Mode)

This is a completely new game mode.

      • All players are Goslings and there is not a Wild Goose!
      • Goslings are trying to catch each other.
      • When a Gosling catches another Gosling, the caught Gosling is eliminated.
      • The catch in this game mode is that every 3 rounds all Goslings switch directions! So the player furthest ahead suddenly becomes the furthest behind... REVERSE
      • Furthermore every round the player with the longest answer, in the following round rolls the dice instead of an answer, putting them severely at risk. However if a 0 is rolled this Initiates another reverse...
      • No players can be eliminated until the 6th round (6th Topic card).
      • The winner is the last gosling alive.

        Wild Goose Gamble (Game Mode)

This game mode can only be played with a player controlled Wild Goose!

        • When the round finishes and players reveal their answers, the players with correct answers (no same answers, correct spellings, correct based on the topic) must roll the die individually.
        • Players must call higher or lower - if they think the roll will be higher or lower than the length of their answers.
        • If they get the call correct they move the length of their answer, if not they stay where they are.
        • If players roll equal to their word length, they do not move.
        • Players with incorrect answers also roll the die, but they move back what they roll!
        • The first Gosling to finish two laps wins.
        • Alternatively if the Wild Goose catches all the Goslings it wins.
        • Goslings turn into Goost's when caught by the Wild Goose, they do not have to roll the die and call higher or lower.
